I actually cut a round 3" hole approximately centered on the left side of
my 4000.  Then I mounted a fan (like the kind in the power supply)
sucking air out of the Amiga.  I also left the only slot cover left off
to allow a "cold air return".  It does a fantastic job.  (BTW, instead of
using an internal power lead to supply a 12 volt source to the fan, I had
a 14 volt 700ma transformer that runs the fan at a higher speed providing
much greater air flow and have run it this way for 100's of hours (maybe
thousands) and without problem.

As for leaving your drives on all the time, I don't know how I feel about
that.  I know the problems with constant turning on & off, but I also
know that a drive spinning 5400 or 7200 RPM certainly generates friction
and wouldn't want to wear 'em out any sooner than necessary.
